• Problem receiving Astra1 (19.2E) channels in the Pyrenees!

    Hello all,

At home, in The Netherlands, I am using a (Vantage HDCS 8000) satellite receiver and a satellite dish of 1 meter with a digital universal single Monoblock with 2 LNB’s, one output (6.2 degrees) for both Astra1 (19.2 E) Hotbird “Blue HD 2120 NX 0,2dB”. The Dish is aligned to Astra1 (primary focus) and Hotbird (secondary lnb). The signal of both Astra and Hotbird are OK.

In the summer, we are spending our vacation in the French Pyrénées. We are having the same system but with a dish of 80 cm. the signal of the Hotbird is acceptable (bit weaker than at home) but the signal of Astra1 (the Dutch channels) are extremely week, so some time we can watch some channels and some time not. Strange enough, the signal get stronger by using a simple satellite finder between the LNB block and the receiver. The question is: What is the best solution for this problem?

    Thanks regards,

    Robert

4G likely to disrupt TV in two million UK homes

In a written answer to a parliamentary question, UK minister for culture, communications and the creative industries Ed Vaizey has revealed that instead of providing opportunities for TV use, 4G telecoms networks could actually interrupt TV signals.

In his reply, Vaizey said the rollout of 4G services using freed up spectrum next to digital TV could affect up to 945,000 households which use signal amplifiers to boost their television reception and 953,000 which rely on communal aerials.

The issue has been known for a while. A January 2011 technical report that the UK TV regulator Ofcom commissioned from Cobham Technical Services (CTS) found potential interference of cable TV services from LTE 4G deployment in the 800 MHz band.

Attempting to address the latest issue, Vaizey said Ofcom had assurances that the number of affected homes would “fall dramatically” following implementation of techniques to minimise disruption.

  • Revolver fires ‘first’ social video-on-demand service

Revolver fires ‘first’ social video-on-demand service

    Editor ©RapidTVNews | 18-05-2012

Leading UK independent film distributor and production company Revolver Entertainment has launched what it claims is the world’s first social video-on-demand (So-VOD) service on Facebook.

The new FiNDWATCHSHARE integrates the discovery, sharing and viewing of Revolver’s library of films including new releases and catalogue titles. The sharing capability is said to be a unique aspect of the video service, enabling users who share films with their Facebook friends to save up to 50% on the purchase price as well as accessing the latest film news and features, special promotions and exclusive content. As well as going through Facebook, FiNDWATCHSHARE users can also rent and buy films through services such as iTunes, Play.com and Amazon.

As part of the rollout, Revolver worked with social service development company Softwind Studio who has deployed video on demand services for Top Gear and Doctor Who, for BBC Worldwide. The video hosting solution for FiNDWATCHSHARE is powered by cloud content provider BrightCove.
With nearly 23 million views on YouTube, Revolver says that it is an expert in social media marketing. Commented CEO Justin Marciano: “FiNDWATCHSHARE was a natural progression in both our distribution and marketing strategy. We wanted to create an immersive and fun way for people to discover and access films in different ways; on their favourite devices – and when and where they want – and to reward them for it. We believe the platform of So-VOD has huge potential moving into the future. We are currently considering offers from third parties to partner us moving forward, as we look to roll out the platform internationally, expand its content, and extend its reach.”

Revolver is offering other territories the opportunity to be involved in FiNDWATCHSHARE as it looks to expand by rolling out the license internationally, and inviting additional content from third-party partners.

  • RapidSwitch helps international live streaming company bloom in Arab Spring

Livestation, the largest aggregator of live streaming television news, has credited the dedicated hosting it gets from RapidSwitch for helping it cope with a phenomenal growth in traffic during the Arab Spring.

Livestation works with the world’s biggest broadcasters, making their news available in an IP format and streaming it through websites, smartphone apps and even set top boxes. The company is based in Shoreditch, London, the UK’s digital and tech hub.

Demand for news from the Middle East during the Arab Spring protests caused Livestation’s web traffic to surge from less than 1 million to almost 15 million unique visitors per month.

Lippe Oosterhof, CEO of Livestation, says: “The Arab Spring was transformational for us. To deal with the spike in traffic, hosting from RapidSwitch was absolutely critical. Broadcasters like Al Jazeera were relying on us for streaming so it was the only way for us to deliver our service in what was a very, very challenging time.”

Livestation has just won a deal to deliver Sky News via the internet to viewers in the US and Canada. Viewers there can now receive Sky News’ international feed by subscribing to Livestation for $2.99 a month.

Lippe Oosterhof, explains: “Livestation couldn’t have grown as fast as it has if it wasn’t for the efficient and resilient dedicated hosting we get from RapidSwitch. Even before this latest deal with Sky News we had grown by over 300 per cent in the past year alone.”

The Livestation platform is hosted in RapidSwitch’s Maidenhead data centre where a collection of satellite dishes and dedicated servers linked by fibre optic runs delivers high quality signals at the fastest speeds.

RapidSwitch works with a number of live streaming companies which often require tier 1 peering arrangements with plenty of high quality, low latency bandwidth.
Sarah Haran, managing director of RapidSwitch, says: “At RapidSwitch we have one of the fastest and most resilient UK networks for both UK and overseas bound traffic.”

Joe Connor, CTO of Livestation, adds: “RapidSwitch brings Livestation great service stability. Technical support staff are on site 24 hours a day which means we can work on what matters to us, without worrying about the technology falling over.”

  • Can’t get German Eurosport on Astra

    Hi
As the Analogue eurosport internation was shut down I bought a Ross disk and decoder from B +Q.

I have set it up and pointed it in the same direct as my old dish but i am not getting anything. When I scan for channels the highest signal i get is 40% (most are about 25%). I’ve tried both the new and old dish (which has a universal LNB) but no difference.

Also to set up the old dish I used a satellite finder and this worker very well. But when I try to use it I get nothing (on the analogue system even if you where way off you could still turn up the gain and get something).

    The settings I’m using are
    Astra 1H/1L/1
    Lnb type Universal
    LNB low 9750
    LNB high 10600
    22Khz Auto
    DisEqc Disabled
    LNB Power ON

    Any suggestion?

    Thanks

    Steve

  • Greasing an Actuator Arm

Some of you may have read my other thread and know that I am at present trying to fix my ‘dead’ actuator.

I was wondering, before I go too far and bust it completely, how and where I should be greasing the arm?

Having split it into two parts I started to unscrew the worm drive, do I……

    1. Unscrew the worm fully out and pump grease down through the nut into the inner tube part?
(Is there anything likely to be attached to the worm inside the inner part eg. nut, bearing etc. I stopped unwinding to seek advice before I heard the sound of ‘bits’ falling off inside the tube)

    or

    2. Just slap some grease on the worm and work in and out a few times?

Also, the two thrust ball bearings a little grease, oil, WD40 or leave dry once they have been cleaned.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated guys.

    Many Thanks

  • ITU defines 4K and 8K UHDTV

ITU defines 4K and 8K UHDTV
    May 16, 2012

The ITU has defined the parameter values for two formats of ultra high definition TV (UHDTV). These are the 4K and 8K UHDTV formats. They are constructed as multiples of the 1080p1920 format in ITU-R Rec. 709.

According to a statement by the European Broadcasting Union, the new formats take advantage of future displays’ greater colour range, have the option of ‘constant luminance’ encoding, and allow up to 120 pictures/second. Discussions to broadcast these systems currently centre on the largely unused 22GHz satellite broadcast band, but terrestrial broadcasting may eventually be possible, the EBU said.

Lieven Vermaele, EBU director of technology and development commented: “Facilitating these superb pictures hasn’t been made possible overnight – this represents over ten years of technical discussion and experiment. It has been a long journey – but we are delighted to have arrived at this point and pleased that the EBU has been able to make a contribution to broadcasting history.”
