Surprise upturn for Czech IPTV service

The Czech incumbent telco Telefónica O2 ended 2011 with 136,000 subscribers to its IPTV service O2TV.

This was 5% more than a year earlier and largely thanks to a successful Christmas bundling offer with broadband internet, when it gained 5,000 more customers.

Telefónica O2 also had 872,000 xDSL accesses at year’s end (+8.1%), while its new VDSL service secured 103,200 subscribers between May and December, equivalent to 12% of the company’s total xDSL base.

Total revenues for Telefónica O2’s fixed business fell by 6.9% year-on-year in 2011 to CZK22,206 million (€886 million), while in Q4 it was 4.4% lower than a year earlier.

O2TV was one of the first IPTV services to launch in Central and Eastern Europe and has seen little subscriber growth in the last 3-4 years.

Its VOD offer was revamped with the launch of a new HD section in Q4 2011.
